“Kick Start” is the follow-up to Severn’s recording debut of “Song for Fina”, which earned him a prestigious DownBeat Award. A playful, funky tune, “Kick Start” is dedicated to the Kickstarter backers who helped Severn’s dream of recording his original music become a reality. On the recording project, Severn teamed up with the multiple Emmy winner, GRAMMY nominee, producer and guitarist Chieli Minucci, along with Special EFX members Joel Rosenblatt on drums and Jay Rowe on keyboards.
An exciting and versatile bassist, 14-year-old Severn has won multiple awards, performed coast to coast, shared the stage with world-class musicians, appeared at many notable music festivals, and recorded his award-winning original music with prominent jazz artists. He just returned from LA after performing again at the NAMM Show, the world’s largest music products trade show.
Severn’s musical aptitude earned him two 2018 DownBeat Student Music Awards, considered the most prestigious awards in jazz education and the educational equivalent to the GRAMMYs. His maiden voyage into composing demonstrates his musical sophistication and depth, and is a step into new artistic paths. Teen Town, the band Severn formed at 12, has appeared at many renowned festivals and events, including the Berks Jazz Fest, the Dauphin County Jazz & Wine Festival, the Scranton Jazz Festival, and TEDx Harrisburg. They’ve opened for the Victor Wooten Trio, the Tierney Sutton Band, and the Original Drifters, among others. Teen Town will appear on WVIA’s Homegrown Series this spring, and will return to the upcoming 2019 Berks Jazz Fest in April. As a soloist, Severn has performed at the 2018 and 2019 NAMM Shows, the 2018 Dallas International Guitar Festival, the Berkshires Jazz Festival, and has been a guest with many ensembles in the past 6 years.
Severn is a Markbass Rising Star, an Ernie Ball Music Man artist, has a line of custom strings by Carlos Pavicich, and is sponsored by several other music companies. He’s been taught and mentored by Victor Wooten, Anthony Wellington, Adam Nitti, and many others, and attended Wooten’s Bass/Nature Camp, Berklee’s Groove School, Gerald Veasley’s Bass Bootcamp, the Central PA Jazz Camp, and the Uptown Music Collective.
